When wrapping the smoker with this kind of blanket, make sure that the layer made from aluminum is the one touching the exterior surface of your smoker. Make sure that you wrap the insulation blanket around the smoking equipment and above itself. By doing this, the blanket can be secured through its own mass. Also, never ever cover the firebox with the insulation blanket. This may cause fire problems.
Tip #2 – Using a Welding Blanket
You may also use a welding blanket instead of an insulation blanket. Welding blankets are mainly produced to be used during welding processes so that welders can endure heat and sparks. However, this type of blanket can also be used when you want to insulate your smoker. Just choose the perfect size and thickness of blanket for your equipment. Remember, to wrap the blanket around the smoker except the firebox. Be sure to wrap the blanket around the equipment as many times possible then wrap it over itself so that its weight can hold the blanket in place.
Tip #3 – Using an Insulating Jacket
Apart from the blankets, you may also use an insulating jacket to insulate your smoker. These jackets are especially manufactured for smokers and are made of fabric covered in aluminum. There are different sizes to choose from depending on the dimensions of your smoker. Choose one that can fit perfectly on your grill smoker.
Tip #4 – Using a Cement Board
Inspect your firebox every once in a while to be sure that there is no fuel burning in it. Once you are sure that there is no active fuel, get a tape measure and determine the dimensions of the firebox’s interior. Take a piece of cement board and cut it according to the dimensions of the firebox. After doing this, position the cut piece of cement board adjacent to the firebox’s interior. Doing this method will help in insulating the smoker.
